Rural Women’s Enterprise Support Project GHANA
The Commonwealth Countries’ League is proud to announce sponsorship for its Rural Women’s Enterprise Support Project to the Victory Foundation for Education and Development (V-FED) based in Kukurantumi, Ghana.
The Commonwealth Fund for ‘Opportunity through Enterprise’ project will provide empowerment and development opportunities by opening up a window of hope for women in need in targeted countries, one of which is Ghana.
The project in Ghana will focus on vegetable production through the use of high yielding varieties and bead crafting by making use of local resources available in the Kukurantumi area of Ghana. The Victory Foundation for Education and Development (V-FED) will be engaged for a period of up to 2 years who will led project implementation and reporting on project progress and achievements, including the following:-
a) Conduct Participant Training
b) Community Group Sensitization
c) Preparation of Sites and Training of Participants in Bead Making
d) Development of Site
e) Cultivating site
f) Use of Co-Operatives to deal with products
g) Harvesting, Sorting, Packaging, Marketing and Advisory sessions
It is expected that the skills developed through implementation of the project would then provide a platform for the beneficiary women to become self-employed local business leaders. The project will also assist in addressing food security issues and agriculture development in an efficient and sustainable way towards empowering poor and low income households in the Kukurantumi area of Ghana in line with the Government of Ghana’s Food and Agriculture Sector Development Policy (FADEP II, 2007).
In Ghana twenty five women have been trained in vegetable production. Fifteen women have, started cultivating vegetables in their own gardens following the training programmes forty five children beneﬁtted. Mothers are now able to pay their children’s fees and provide two meals a day.
